CRYOLIFE, the only AABB accredited cord blood bank in Hong Kong

CRYOLIFE, the only AABB accredited cord blood bank in Hong Kong

Amidst public concern over a recent case of blood contamination found at public hospital, Hong Kong's longest serving cord blood bank CRYOLIFE rose above the challenge to earn the accreditation from the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), the industry's most recognized professional body.

It is the first time a cord blood bank in Hong Kong has achieved this quality standard and acquired membership of the association. The accreditation of CRYOLIFE bespeaks the high level of professionalism and due diligence undertaken by the cord blood bank both in documentation of its procedures and in operations and practice at the laboratory.

The AABB is an international association representing individuals and institutions involved in activities related to transfusion and cellular therapies, including transplantation medicine. It offers one of the most widely acclaimed accreditation programmes recognized by the industry around the world. The AABB accreditation includes a comprehensive audit of the quality and operational systems of a facility to ensure its compliance with the applicable standards of the organization.

In early 2007, CRYOLIFE filed a request for accreditation to AABB and the facility was required to demonstrate that it has met the eligibility requirements for such undertakings. After the initial qualification, an on-site audit by an AABB assessor took place in November last year. The on-site audit involved an intensive review of the policies, procedures and practices designed and undertaken by the cord blood bank in its quality and operational systems. One of the major concerns of the assessor was to evaluate the cord blood bank's management's intention and competence in interpreting the standards and recommending solutions to meet those requirements.

"As the industry reckoned, certification from the AABB is probably one of the highest quality assurance a private blood bank can offer to its customers. True to the organization's advocacy, we believe compliance is as important as education. Hence, as the longest serving cord blood bank in Hong Kong, we are proud to share our experience and our problem solving innovations with our assessor and won his endorsement in the course of it,”"explained Anthony C. F. Chan, Ph.D. (Cantab), Laboratory Director of CRYOLIFE.

Today, CRYOLIFE joins the ranks of a selected 43 cord blood banks worldwide as the only member of the AABB in Hong Kong and China. Launched in January 1998, CRYOLIFE is the territory's first family cord blood storage programme and has since served close to 10,000 parents in saving the cord blood of their new born babies. The company's facility is AABB accredited and ISO9002 certified; housing the largest cord blood inventories in Hong Kong.

"The accreditation from AABB is an independent assessment of our professionalism and quality, and it dispels the community's skepticism towards the quality of work undertaken by private blood banks here in Hong Kong," commented Dr Mak Yiu Kwong, specialist in Haematology & Haematological Oncology and Medical Director of CRYOLIFE.

About the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB)
Celebrating 60 years of operation in 2007, AABB is an international association representing individuals and institutions involved in activities related to transfusion and cellular therapies, including transplantation medicine. AABB member facilities are responsible for collecting virtually all of the nation's blood supply and transfusing more than 80 percent of all blood and blood components used in the United States.

Since its inception in 1947, AABB — formerly known as the American Association of Blood Banks — has continued to support the highest standards of medical, technical and administrative performance; scientific investigation; and clinical application through standard setting, accreditation, education, advocacy and other activities. The association is also dedicated to increasing public awareness of the importance of voluntary blood donation.

Nearly 2,000 institutions, including community and hospital blood banks, hospital transfusion services and laboratories, and about 8,000 individuals, including physicians, nurses and other health care providers; scientists; administrators; medical technologists; blood donor recruiters; and public relations practitioners, are members of AABB. AABB's active membership — located in all 50 states and 80 countries — provides direction to the association through its board of directors and more than 30 committees of volunteer professionals.
