Properties of Cord Blood


Cord blood is the blood found in the blood vessels of placenta and in the section of attached umbilical cord. In general, the umbilical cord was discarded as medical waste after the baby was delivered.

Cord blood contains all constituents of normal blood: red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma. Thanks to pioneering research of H. E. Broxmeyer from Indiana University in the 1980s, the rich presence of hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) in cord blood came to our attention. HSC is the particular stem cell which has blood forming properties similar to that found in bone marrow.

Cord blood also contains multipotent mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). Research on MSC’s clinical application on regenerative therapy is turning in promising results.
